WAKE ISLANDS
The Wake Islands are situated at 19 deg 20'North and 165 deg 35'West in the Central Pacific about 3700 km west of Hawaii and 2500 km northeast of Guam. The archipelago is an atoll about 7.5 sq km in size and consists of the main island Wake, Wilkes Island and Peale Island. All islands are very flat and have extensive sandy beaches. The lagoon is closed by reefs.
In the past the atoll was named Halcyon, the Japanese call it Ontorishima. Today it is administrated by the US Air Force. The USAF built two airports and bridges to connect the islands. The military airport is situated on Wake and Peale Island was used for stop overs by the civil aviation in former times. Nowadays there are no more scheduled flight services to Wake.
The climate is very warm and dry throughout the year. The water for the 400 inhabitants is obtained from a seawater desalination plant. On the island there are also a weather station and an oceanographic research base. Furthermore Wake Island is also an important junction of submarine cables.
Amateur radio: prefix KH9, own DXCC entity. WAZ zone 31, ITU zone 65, IOTA: OC-053. Wake Island is rank 9 on Germany's Most Wanted DXCC List, Time difference: UTC +10h.
