The Agalega Islands are situated 950km North of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean at 10°40'South and 56°55'East. Altogether North and South island have an area of 70 sq km, from north to south it measures about 10km. Both islands are linked by a sandbank. The climate is subtropically, average temp is 23° Celsius and the raining period lasts from Nov to Apr (tornadoes between Sep and May).

The islands in the Indian Ocean were settled already by the Phoenicians and Malayans and rediscovered by the Portuguese sailor Pedro Mascarenhas in 1512 Since then all islands east of Madagascar (e.g. Mauritius, Reunion, Rodri- gues) were named Mascarene Islands. After Dutch, French and English admini- stration over the islands around Mauritius were given got full sovereignity in 1968.

Copra and coconut oile are produced for export, some cattle are raised and vegetable grown for local use. There are some roads, but only few cars.
