Bear Island is situated between the North Cape and Svalbard. Its size is about 178 sqkm. Most parts of the islands are covered with glaciers the rest is covered with moss and lichen. Many lakes break up the monotony of the landscape and the highest mountain is the Miseryfjellet (536m). The climate is similar to Svalbard. In summer the thermometer climbs up to 6 degrees centigrade. The only animals which can survive are some birds, seals, the Arctic fox and the Polar bear which was responsible for the naming of the island.
Bear Island belongs to Norway since 1925. Already in 1918 the first radio and weather station, Bjoernoey Radio, was built at the north coast to support the fishermen in the rough Norwegian Sea. Nowadays this station is operated automatically.
