VANCOUVER ISLAND

Vancouver Island is situated at the Canadian west coast in the Pacific. This rather large island island belongs to British Columbia. Visitors find every- thing from relaxed seaports to landscapes for adventurers, rural areas and big cities, quiet sandy beaches and rain forests in the MacMillan Park. Remarkable are also the 600 year old douglas spruces and the famous totem poles of SGaang Gwaii (UNESCO World Heritage). Numerous smaller islets are situated off the coast of the main Vancouver Island, a few of them are typical holiday islands.

Victoria, capital of British Columbia since 1871, is situated at the southern tip of Vancouver Island. This is also the end of the Trans Canada Highway which starts 7700km away at the Canadian east coast. The town has many buildings from the 19th century including the parliament building which is illuminated by 3000 lamps at night. Famous Chinatown was founded in 1860.

Several artist colonies ensure a large number of cultural activities. Famous are the Pacific Rim Whale Festival in May , the Jazz Days in June and the Victoria Summer Music Festival in summer.

Amateur radio: Vancouver Island belongs to Canada, prefix VE7. IOTA: NA-036
