SPECIAL EDITOR'S NOTE: My family (wife/OPDX's chief proof-reader Linda, Tedd [TJ], Katie) and I (KB8NW) would like to wish all DXers, Contesters and OPDX readers a very "Happy New Year". The year 2000 was a great year for DXers/Contesters. It brought two new DXCC entities, East Timor and Chesterfield Island. The year 2000 has also brought DXers activity from Bhutan (A5). For years this entity has been the number one most wanted country. It has also brought us Bouvet (3Y), Clipperton Island (FO0) and Tromelin Island (FR/T), just to name a few. WOW, what a year! Let's hope that the year 2001 will be just as kind to DXers as 2000 was. Many would like to see a major operations to North Korea (P5) and Scar- borough Reef (BS7). After working one or both of these entities many DXers would probably receive the ultimate "ARRL DXCC #1 Award". Also, let's hope the new year brings the DXers/Contesters another exciting year and great band conditions. As always, I would like thank the many who have contributed information over the year (there are too many to list). REMEMBER, without them there would not be an OPDX Bulletin.
3B8, MAURITIUS. There has been a lot of activity from this one over the last few months. Abid/3B8FG, Jacky/3B8CF, Rashid/3B8FQ and Pat/3B8GF have been quite active on 20 meters, generally after 0200z. Pat usually can be found on SSB while the others are on CW. There has been some 10 meters CW/SSB QSNs by 3B8CF and 3B8FG after 1200z.
3Y0, BOUVET. Astronaut Chuck Brady, N4BQW, continues to be active in between the bad weather he has been receiving. This past week he has been active on a few other bands besides 20/15/10 meters. There were spots on 12 meters (24945 kHz between 1400-1900z), 40 meters (7096 kHz between 0045 and 0130z) and 80 meters (3790 kHz between 0100 and 0200z). QSL via WA4FFW. 4D68, PHILIPPINES. This special prefix is being used by some DU operators to celebrate the 68th anniversary of the Philippine Amateur Radio Association. Aki, 4D68HBC, was heard this past week. QSL via JA1HBC.
4S, SRI LANKA. Ananada, 4S7NB, likes to frequent 20 meters (between 14180 and 14205 kHz) after 0100z.
5R, MADAGASCAR. Albert, 5R8O, continues to please the many on 20 meters CW around 14015 kHz (+/- 3 kHz) after 0200z. QSL via 5R8FL. For the SSB ops, Andre, 5R8FL, likes between 14185 and 14200 kHz after 0230z. He sometimes can be found on 10 meters, this past week on 28507 kHz at 1145z. QSL via CBA. Ake, 5R8FU, was also active on 10 meters CW/SSB. He was around 28029 kHz (0930-1000z) and 28442 kHz (1230-1400z). QSL via SM5DJZ.
5U, NIGER. Dan, 5U7DG, was heard on 3796 kHz this past weekend around 0100z and again at 1600z. QSL via K4SE.
8Q, MALDIVES. The "425 DX News" reports that Gil, IZ1DLV, will be active from Dhiggiri Island (AS-013) from January 2-9th. He will operate on 10, 12, 15, 17 and 20 meters SSB. There was no callsign mentioned. QSL direct ONLY to IZ1DLV: Gil, P. O. Box 7039, 16148 Genova - GE, Italy.
9H, MALTA. ALbert, 9H1AL, has been active on the WARC bands. He seems to like 12 meters lately. Check around 24900 or 24957 kHz between 1530z and 1630z. Also, check 18070 kHz around 1730z and 10103 kHz beginning around 2300z. He was also on 40 meters (7004 kHz) around 0030z.
9N, NEPAL. Lawrence, 9N7RB, in Katmandu, has been active on 20 meters CW/SSB between 1230-1300 and around 0200z. Check around 14010 and 14190 kHz.
9V, SINGAPORE. James, 9V1YC, has been keeping folks happy on 40 meters CW on 7011 kHz beginning around 2200z. He later moves to 15 or 20 meters around 2300z. Check 14025 and 21021 kHz.
A5, BHUTAN. "QRZ DX" reports that another operation from here will take place by Dimitri, RA9CO, as A52CO, scheduled for March 15-21st. He has his visa and tickets. QSL via UA9DD. ADDED NOTE: Remember to look for Glenn, W0GJ, and his son Mark, N0MJ, to be active this week as A52GJ and A52MJ.
ANTARCTICA. The "Russian Robinson Club" is proud to announce that the "International Complex Expedition" to the South Pole will take place from now through January 15th, with possible activities from D4/, CE8/R3RRC (Punta Arenas), R3RRC/ant (Patriot Hills Base - WABA MN-01) and from an air balloon above the South Pole as R3RRC/am. Operators will be RW3GW, UA3GVV and UA0XB. QSLs are via RW3GW. Also, for two QSOs made on two different bands or with two different callsigns during the Expedition, it is possible to receive a "Special Award" in honor of the 180th anniversary of the discovery of the Antarctica by the famous Russian Explorers and Icemen Bellinghausen and Lazarev. The fee of the Award is 12 IRCs for the HAMs outside of Russia. (USD are not acceptable) The Award Manager is: Valery I. Sushkov, RW3GW, P.O. Box 3, Lipetsk - 398000, Russia.
The "Russian Robinson Club" also plans to activate the Chilean island "Riesco" in the Magallanes and Antarctica Chilean Province Group from January 15-20th, with the possible callsign XQ8RI. BA, CHINA. David, BA4DW, has been very active lately on 80 and 40 meters CW. Check 7000-7025 kHz starting around 1000z and around 3500-3515 kHz between 1230 and 1430z. QSL via: David Y.J. Zhou, P.O. Box 040-088, Shanghai, 200040, China.
C6, BAHAMAS. Lee, N7NU, will be in Treasure Cay on Abaco Island from January 18-26th, as N7NU/C6A and/or C6AJX. Activity will be on 80-10 meters and MAYBE 160 meters upon request. He will concentrate on CW and will try some PSK31. There is one catch to his activity, Lee states, "The hamming is (gasp!) secondary to vacation with my girl friend :-) ". QSL via N7NU.
CORRECTION TO OPDX.491. Under "T8, PALAU", we reported that Koji, JK7TKE, would be active this past week as T88TU from Belau. This operation took place earlier back in the fall.
D2, ANGOLA. Gabriel, D2EB, was active on 10/15 meters CW this past week on 21025 kHz between 2100-0000z and 28030 kHz 0900-1300z. QSL via I3LLH.

DXPEDITION UNIVERSITY (Learn the Art of DXing in Jamaica!). Kenny/K2KW and Tom/N6BT informed the DX community that after 10 years of planning and 2 years of writing materials, DX University is now a reality. You have a chance to go to Jamaica and "Learn the art and 'How To' of DXpedition Planning and Running Pileups!" DXpedition University ("DXU") is the first of its kind to provide a training ground for energetic radio amateurs wanting to learn the foundational methods and tactics of DXpeditioning. A group of 6-10 hams will go to a proven site in Jamaica (6Y). Participants become part of a team, just like the World Record 6Y2A Team. Learning begins before the trip with planning procedures and continues through the Jamaica stay. With expert hands-on training, team members will be shown the essential skills needed to feel confident about venturing out on their own DX-oriented vacations and in their ability to run and control pile-ups. There is not only personal instruction, but also hard copy manuals covering all aspects are also included. Besides setting up a complete multiple transmitter station and running DX pile-ups during the week, the team will participate in the A.R.R.L. SSB contest, with additional pointers provided during real-time. This is a learning environment, and all questions will be answered and fully explained. The Jamaican accommodations are radio-oriented (not a luxury hotel) and include full time staff, transportation (private driver), plus side trips during the week. EP, IRAN. Mohsen, EP3SMH, was active over the holiday weekend on 15 meters SSB on 21286 kHz starting around 1300z. EP2MKO was heard on 10 meters CW the past week between 1230 and 1400z. He was also heard on 18070 kHz after 1400z.
FG, GUADELOUPE. Jacques, F6HMJ, will be active as FG/F6HMJ from here from January 10-24th. His modes and bands of activity were not mention.
FR5, REUNION ISLAND. Pat, FR5FD, was heard active this past week on the WARC bands. On some bands begging for a contact. Check 30 meters starting around 0130z and as late as 0330z. Check 17 meters around 18075 kHz around 0030z. Check 12 meters 24893 kHz between 1200 and 1500z.
HR, HONDURAS. Jay, K4ZLE (MU0BKA), will be active as HR3/K4ZLE from January 12-15th. Activity will be on all HF bands, preference will be given to CW and the WARC bands. He will have PSK31 with him. QSL via K4ZLE.
IOTA NEWS...............
OE75, AUSTRIA. Chris, OE8CIQ, reports that from January 1st to December 31st (2001) all amateur radio stations in Austria are allowed to use the special prefix OE75 to celebrate the 75 anniversary of the OEVSV (this is the Austrian amateur radio club). He (Chris) will be on air as often as possible using the callsign OE75CIQ. There will be several awards that will be issued by the OEVSV. SPECIAL EVENT. The XI Panamerican Jamboree will gather 8,000 Scouts from all America, for a joyful start to the new millennium, with 6 days of fascinating activities in spectacular natural settings like the Iguau Falls and the ecological Park in Paraguay, as well as the lake and the power station of Itaipu. The XI Panamerican Jamboree will happen on January 7-12th. A special station will be active for the event. Look for station PS5J to be active on all modes and bands. QSL via PY5UEB. T2, TUVALU. Albert, HB9BCK, is active as T20CK until January 8th. He has been very active 20/12/10 meters CW/SSB. Most of his activity seems to start around 2030z and lasts until 0500z. Frequencies to watch for are (or around): 14005, 14260, 24895, 24970, 28005 and 28495 kHz. QSL via the bureau or CBA.
VP5, TURKS AND CAICOS ISLANDS. Don, KN4UG, will be operating from here during January 19-30th, 2001. He will operate in the 160 Meters Contest and the NA QSO Contest on the weekends. During the week he will be active mostly on 28460 kHz as KN4UG/VP5. QSL to his home callsign in N.C.

XW. LAOS. Mauro/IN3QBR and Fabry/IN3ZNR are very active now from here until about January 8th as XW3QBR and XW3ZNR. Most of the activity has been on 20 meters CW/SSB with some activity on 15 meters.
YK, SYRIA. Excerpts from a press release by Bernie, W3UR, editor of "The Daily DX" report that the Cinco Nueve Contest Group (CNCG) and the Willamette Valley DX Club (WVDXC) are sponsoring a DXpedition to Syria. "DX Syria 2001" is a non-profit organization formed for the promotion and organization of this expedition. The Syrian government and local Syrian hams invited an American team of 8 operators for a February 2001 DXpedition at the Syrian Telecommunication Establishment (STE) site in Damascus. The group hopes to be on the air February 3rd. The group will be active for 9 days. The STE operating site is the same one used by the 1994 YK0A expedition. The group has been assigned YK9A and plans to be active on 6 through 160 meters on CW, SSB and RTTY. Team members will include: Ron/WJ7R, Dick/N7RO, Bob/W4DR, Rosalie/N4CFL (YL), Carl/K9LA, Vicky/AE9YL (YL), Jim/W4PRO and team leader Al/K7AR. QSL cards will be handled by K9LA: Carl Luetzelschwab, 1227 Pion Road, Fort Wayne, IN 46845, USA. ZB, GILBRALTAR. Jay, K4ZLE (MU0BKA), will be active as ZB2/K4ZLE from January 12-15th. Activity will be on all HF bands, with a preference to CW and the WARC bands. He will have PSK31 with him. QSL via K4ZLE.
